Profile

Ivan Kosalec, PhD, a scientific advisor with tenure, holds a professorship at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry. He participates in presenting courses and lecturing to pharmacy and medical biochemistry students, as well as in mentoring in doctoral studies. For the purposes of scientific training, he attended a number of foreign institutions as a FEMS fellow (INRA Institute, Toulouse) and as a guest lecturer at the University of Maribor (EU Project). Since the accession of Croatia to the EU (2013), he has been serving as a Croatian delegate to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in the HMPC Committee. Moreover, he is an external expert to the Croatian Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (HALMED) and a member of the Ministry of Health's Interdisciplinary Section for Antibiotic Resistance Control (ISKRA). During his scientific and teaching activities so far, he has been a mentor of several master's theses, three specialist’s thesis and two successfully defended doctoral dissertations, while three doctoral dissertations are currently under preparation.

His scientific work focuses on the area of the inhibition of virulence of medically important yeasts and the determination of in vitro antimicrobial activity of substances of synthetic and plant origin. He has published more than 70 scientific and numerous professional papers. He has been a contributor to several European and national projects, mainly orientated on the identification of microbial species and the antimicrobial activities of substances of different origin (nanomaterials, botanicals, de novo synthesised molecules etc.). As an active peer reviewer, he is also a member of the international editorial board in three scientific journals (Molecules, Archives of Occupational Hygiene and Toxicology, Journal of Pharmaceutical Microbiology). During the course of his work at the Faculty he has cooperated with several pharmaceutical, food-supplement and cosmetic oriented companies, as well as with scientific and public health institutions. He has received the Diploma - Award of the Croatian Pharmaceutical Society in 2017.
